The United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) is a United Nations program consisting of an Executive board with 36 elected Member States. At CAHSMUN 2017, UNICEF will comprise 70 Member States. As a globally working humanitarian and development agency, UNICEF leads in protecting and promoting the rights of children around the world; these rights range from basic necessities such as nutrition and safe shelter to protection from conflict, pre-natal care, clean water, healthcare, and education. UNICEF was created in 1946 through the General Assembly resolution (GA/RES/57) and the mandate, to help protect the lives of children and promote their development, has stayed consistent. UNICEF’s mandate recognizes that the higher the vulnerability of a child, the more they should be prioritized; thus, UNICEF provides support to programs and initiatives that target the world’s most vulnerable and marginalized children.

UNICEF works under the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Through assisting parents, governments, and communities in gaining the resources and the proficiency to meet their duties to the child, UNICEF ensures children across the globe are properly cared for. These duties include protecting the rights of children to receive free and compulsory education - even at times of humanitarian crisis, the restoration span post crisis, or in unstable situations.

UNICEF offers the traditional Model United Nations experience for delegates of all experience levels. Position papers are recommended for this committee, but are mandatory for delegates to be considered for awards. Please read about CAHSMUN’s Position Paper policy, which can be found under the list of committees on the “Committees” page.

Questions, inquiries, and position papers for this committee can be emailed to unicef@cahsmun.org.

The UNICEF committee will participate in Summit A - more information about the Summit program can be found here

Danica Li | Director
Currently a grade 11 student, Danica is captivated by the world of politics and diplomacy, and is ecstatic to be serving as the Director of UNICEF. As a part of the Model UN club at Richmond Christian School, Danica has been attending MUN conferences ever since Grade 9, with her first conference being CAHSMUN 2015. Truly impacted by the resolutions and positive ideas formulated in committee sessions, Danica became determined to seek out these solutions outside the committee room through becoming involved in various non-profit organizations. From working as the Executive Director of Human Resources at Kindlers Society to serving as Vice President of UNITE, Danica consistently strives to make positive changes in the world and aid the global community. Outside of MUN and her non-profit work, Danica enjoys participating in the Student and Leadership Team at her school, singing, and reading pointless conspiracy theories. Danica is honoured to help delegates begin or further develop their Model UN career and is looking forward to a conference filled with intense debate, collaboration, communication, and compromise.

Wendy Hu | Chair
A senior at Lord Byng Secondary, Wendy was first introduced to MUN in grade 9 and has participated in a multitude of conferences ever since. Outside of MUN, Wendy is heavily involved in her school and community as both a student leader and volunteer. In her spare time, Wendy enjoys admiring Harley’s wit in Suits, pretending she’s a Broadway star in the shower, and going out for Thai food with friends. Wendy is extremely excited to be at CAHSMUN to watch fellow high school students take on the role of passionate delegates. She hopes that all delegates have a rewarding time at CAHSMUN 2017 and cannot wait to meet everyone!

Edward Yu | Chair
Edward is currently a senior at St.Georges School. He attended his first MUN conference in San Francisco three years ago, and ever since he has loved every aspect of MUN. Edward wastes 99% of his time on fantasy hockey, PoGo, Chel, Facebook and other useless activities that will definitely not be helping him get into university. In the other 1% of the time when he isn’t wasting his time - he plays Tennis, Field Hockey, and Soccer; and is heavily involved in Service. One thing Edward dislikes, or rather hates is spiders. Edwardhas a quite rational fear of spiders, especially when they are raining from the sky (Australia…). Edward is looking forward to chairing at CAHSMUN 2017!
