Established in May 2001, the African Union (AU) is a continental union headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with the aim of replacing the Organization of African Unity (OAU). The organization was officially launched on the ninth of July, 2002, with the vision “An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena.”

Today, the African Union works alongside other organizations including the United Nations, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund to solve major crises and develop the continent. Although corruption, poverty, and the past histories of member states makes total unification nearly impossible and creates extreme challenges to the AU, the organization still strives to politically connect the continent, reduce terrorism or aggression through security escalations, and develop the continent economically.

AU is a committee suited for experienced delegates, but is open to delegates of all experience levels wishing to challenge their capacity as delegates. Position papers are recommended for this committee, but are mandatory for delegates to be considered for awards. Please read about CAHSMUN’s Position Paper policy, which can be found under the list of committees on the “Committees” page.

BACKGROUNDERS now available!

Ryan Ruan | Director
Ryan is a Grade 12 student in the International Baccalaureate Program at the Port Moody Secondary School, and is honoured and ecstatic to serve as your director at the African Union in CAHSMUN 2017. He attended his first MUN conference in 2013, and has since attended numerous conferences. Other than spending his time at MUN, Ryan can typically be found writing news articles for the World International News Group, volunteering at local hospitals, spreading Communist ideologies, and doing anything and everything besides homework. Ryan wishes all delegates good luck and looks forward to an awesome conference at CAHSMUN 2017!

Ken Hong | Chair
Currently a junior at St. George’s School, Ken’s passion for world affairs has been kindled by his participation in the Model UN community for the past five years. Fond recollections of the committee room tend to include fervent speeches, wrongly punctuated resolutions, or attempts to seem somewhat sociable. When he’s not grappling with mathematical expressions, he can be found perusing articles on Canadian politics and deciphering verses of poetry from the Roman Empire, often unwinding himself in the kitchen afterwards. Rumor has it that he can even be spotted at anime conventions around the area from time to time. Ken is very excited to be chairing the African Union at CAHSMUN this year, and hopes to provide all delegates with an educational and exhilarating weekend!

Anna Yang | Chair
Anna is finally a senior student at Dr. Charles Best Secondary, located in the exotic land of Coquitlam. She’s super excited to be chairing the African Union at CAHSMUN 2017. Anna has been captivated with MUN ever since her first ever conference all the way back in grade 9, and has since participated as a delegate, staff member, and Secretariat member at a variety of different conferences. She enjoys MUN for a plethora of reasons, but her number one reason is the fantastic group of individuals that MUN has introduced her to. Anna feels incredibly fortunate to have been able to make such close friends through MUN, and strongly recommends all delegates to familiarize themselves with their local Chief of Staffs. In her spare time, Anna really enjoys eating, sleeping, and writing short stories. She’s looking forward CAHSMUN, and hopes all delegates are at a similar level of excitement.
