The Economic and Financial Affairs Committee (ECOFIN) is one of six General Assembly committees in the United Nations. The committee was formed in 1945 when the Charter of the United Nations came into force, and has since been assigned to the role of supporting the global economy.

ECOFIN functions to discuss issues relating to economic growth and development (including international trade, international financial system, external debt sustainability and commodities), financing for development, sustainable development, human settlements, poverty eradication, globalization and interdependence, operational activities for development, and information and communication technologies for development. Its mandate further explores groupings of nations such as Least Developed Countries to encourage regional growth and support for all nations, which is just one of the many subgroups that are formed under ECOFIN to be able to substantively solve niche issues.

ECOFIN offers the traditional Model United Nations experience for delegates of all experience levels. Position papers are recommended for this committee, but are mandatory for delegates to be considered for awards. Please read about CAHSMUN’s Position Paper policy, which can be found under the list of committees on the “Committees” page.

Tony Chen | Director
Tony is a student going into second year at UBC's Sauder School of Business, and he is very excited to have the honour to serve as your director of ECOFIN at CAHSMUN 2017. Having done every hotel MUN since CAIMUN 2012, he finds great value in MUN from meeting many like-minded individuals and building awareness and knowledge about international events. Outside of MUN, his passions lie in playing the piano, managing a stocks portfolio as well as watching anime. He looks forward to creating a fun experience for all delegates, so don’t hesitate to approach him if you have any questions about anything!

Matthew Remedios | Chair
Matthew is currently a senior attending Vancouver College. He started his MUN journey at the beginning of grade 10 and has loved it ever since. He is very honoured and excited to be the chair for ECOFIN at CAHSMUN 2017. On spare time, Matthew enjoys expressing his views on international issues as well as partaking in debates with his fellow classmates. Being very interested in legal studies, business and politics, you can find him interning at a few downtown firms as well as being involved in political campaigning. Outside of MUN, sports, and school, you can find him working with many non-profit or charitable organizations. During his free time, you can find him watching various k-dramas and cheesy martial arts movies, taking really artsy photos on instagram, learning multiple languages, and drinking lots of Starbucks to study through the night.

Catherine Shin | Chair
With a passion for social justice and public speaking, Catherine discovered her love for MUN last year. She is currently in her final year of high school as a French Immersion student at Dr. Charles Best. Catherine enjoys the sharing of ideas and opinions with delegates of diverse backgrounds as well as the competitive nature of Model UN. In her spare time, she can be found trying Snapchat's numerous filters, perfecting the chocolate chip cookie, or listening to depressing kpop ballads. Catherine is ecstatic to be your ECOFIN chair and cannot wait to spend an unforgettable weekend at CAHSMUN 2017!
